PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Children’s Center of the Stanford Community (CCSC), one of the largest parent cooperatives in the state of California, is licensed to serve more than 200 families of Stanford University faculty, staff, and students. CCSC offers part- and full-time early childhood learning programs for children from eight weeks to five years old. Founded by Stanford graduate students in 1969, CCSC is the only nonprofit, cooperative childcare center on the Stanford University campus.
Dorman Associates, Inc was engaged to design the new 19,000 square foot center that replaced two existing centers. The project is in the heart of the Stanford campus, adjacent to a historical cottage on a site with hundreds of oak trees, and provides classrooms for 226 children from infants and toddlers up to preschool age children. The design solution included a building carefully winding between the trees, creating a series of courtyards that became outdoor play areas. Our designs emphasize the importance of linking classrooms and play areas to optimize the ability for teachers to supervise children. The Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the design supports the Center’s play-based educational philosophy which is grounded in the belief that children are competent, curious and resourceful learners.
The project design considered the guidelines of WELL standard for children's spaces, while adhering to Title 24 and Stanford Sustainability guidelines. Highest level of care is considered in the design of children's spaces, including use of California Health Department guidelines. The design adheres to and exceeds Title 24 requirements.
